Pregnancy Educational Talanoa
The Tīna Initiative
The Tīna Initiative project was established in 2020 by three Wellington Pacific Midwives (Penina Fitisemanu, Therese Stowers and Fana Temese To’omaga) to create and provide culturally appropriate Pacific pregnancy education and information for Pacific women and their families in the Wellington and Porirua regions.
The service now is only in Wellington.
The pregnancy education classes are for all Pasefika pregnant mums, whether it be their first baby or third baby. Mums and their aiga can always learn something new in caring for their babies and their pregnancy journey.

Pasefika Midwives For Pasefika Women
Before we established our collective there had been no antenatal classes facilitated by Pacific Midwives with a pacific lens and focus for Pacific women.
“We saw a huge need in the communities and wanted to create a space that we hoped was more accessible and relevant for the Pacific women in our care, in turn providing them with the necessary knowledge for the best outcomes for their pregnancies, labour and birth and postnatal experiences.”

Join a Pasefika Pregnancy Talanoa
The talanoa takes place in Wellington. Free transport is available for those women who require it to and from the venue. A support person is encouraged to come with you.
The talanoa runs from 10am to 12.30pm, on Saturdays. Each intake is for 2 consecutive Saturdays, to cover all the information you will need to prepare you, for your journey into Motherhood.
The talanoa is interactive, Pacific focussed and appropriate, visually engaging and fun with lots of laughter along the way!
Light refreshments are provded during the classes.
Finally you will receive some practical Pacific resources to take home that can be very useful during your labour.
If this sounds like something you would like to come along to, please click on the ‘Join A Talanoa’ below to see the talanoa dates and to register.
I am very excited to meet you and be part of the journey.

Penina
